About the role:


Our client is seeking an experienced and dedicated IT Support Officer to provide essential first-line support, as part the IT support team for a University in Oxford. You will be reporting to the Head of IT.


The successful applicant will play a crucial role within the IT team. This is an excellent opportunity to use and strengthen your IT skills and knowledge in a range of different contexts. Training and support will be available, and you will be part of a large community of IT staff.


Main Responsibilities:

  • First-line hardware and software support for staff, students, and visitors, on-site and remotely.

  • Provide expert advice and guidance for the staff and students of the Faculty on IT issues, including recommendations on selection of computers, servers and printers and specialist software.

  • Installing new hardware and software; routine maintenance of computing facilities.

  • Installing new IT equipment including printers and other devices, and delivering machines and installing software at the college and other Faculty locations

  • Upgrading software on desktop machines (Windows & Mac).

  • Installing and monitoring backup software while maintaining robust back-up procedures.

  • Maintaining an inventory of all hardware and software for management and insurance purposes

  • Assisting with the maintenance of websites for the Faculty and its research centres, and with the relevant parts of the University’s virtual learning environment (WebLearn and Canvas) and SharePoint when necessary.

  • Providing and maintaining audio-visual support for lectures, seminars, meetings, and conferences.

  • Providing advice to staff on how to use software and online platforms, and how to manage compatibility issues involving University-wide systems (e.g. Oracle).

  • Ensuring anti-virus software is updated and installed on all machines that connect to the University network, running regular security updates on server software, and minimising the impact of malware wherever possible.

  • Liaising with University and College IT staff where necessary.

  • Creating and maintaining user accounts on Windows servers.

  • Assist users with day-to-day system problems, providing training and advice in the use of local systems and software.

  • Maintain records of equipment including hardware, network connections, licences, manuals etc.

  • Implement University rules and requirements pertaining to data protection and the use and misuse of computers and provide advice on these.

  • Manage the annual upgrade of all relevant software including, licence procurement, arranging recovery of equipment for upgrade, deployment of upgrade, return of upgraded equipment and training of end user.

  • Ability to gather and review IT systems requirements and document highly technical work.

  • Provide induction training and guidance to staff and visitors on IT provision within the Faculty, including Wi-Fi access, IT security and Information Security.

  • Advise the Inter-Faculty Head of IT on IT strategy and propose future investment in IT solutions.


Experience required:

  • A degree in any subject, and a recognised IT qualification or equivalent experience

  • Proven ability to maintain and troubleshoot hardware for desktop and laptop computers (PCs and Macs).

  • Proven ability to support users of word-processing, email, and general software packages.

  • Demonstrable knowledge of Windows and Mac operating systems and familiarity with Experience of working with AV equipment, e.g. data projectors.

  • The ability to work as part of a team.

  • The ability to work under pressure, to manage his/her own workload, to work independently and to prioritise competing demands.

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and spoken, including the ability to communicate technical issues in an accessible and supportive way to staff and students at all levels of seniority and experience.
